Drawing on Prof. Christopher Moore's Calling Philosophers Names (Princeton University Press, 2020) and Prof. E.R. Dodds' landmark study of the Gorgias, this segment covers two of Plato's defining moves: the linguistic reframing of philosophos as "lover of wisdom" across four dialogues, and the institutional response to the execution of Socrates in 399 BCE that gave rise to the Academy itself.
The question at the center of this episode — whether a small, intensely trained circle of minds can preserve and transmit something the wider world is not equipped to receive — is one that philosophy, theology, and our own debates about expertise have never fully resolved.
